| Tire selection is as important
to the feel of your car as steering geometry to achieve predictable and
comfortable handling
characteristics. But most people only think about traction going straight,
which isn't a good idea. Since duning is all about
turning, tire selection should focus on turning predictability, slide
characteristics, and durability. Too much sideways tire bite from "round profile" tires can
affect your
handling in a very negative way, causing a car to hop sideways and potentially
roll. Flatter profiled tires let your car slide sideways easier, providing a more predictable
feel,
reducing surprises when turning.
The more rounded profile paddle tires can
provide more traction racing up hills or down the sand drags, but the trade-off
is ill handling, unpredictable side hops when you pitch the car
sideways, sacrificing in all-around duning ability, specifically during turns and spins.
If you want to do what is shown in the picture to the right, the
standard issue Funco Dune Sport tires we use on our turn-key cars is
what we recommend any kit builders to use. |

Handling
characteristics is directly related to rear tire profile. You'll find a dramatic
difference in how each type of tire works. So with prices of around $600 per
pair (rear) it's important you pick the right tire for your car.
Generally we recommend the Dune Sport paddle tire from Sand Tires of
America in 14.5" wide for Subaru motors and 16.5" wide for V8 motors.
Four wheel drifts are really fun in our cars because they feel so
predictable, much like an Ascot racer. Sliding your rail will become the primary fun, something you
likely haven't experienced in other 5 seat cars. But as you build your
sliding skills you can always hit something accidentally like
a berm, hole, or witches eye, potentially popping the tire bead as you slide. To prevent such a mishap we recommend bead locks
be installed on all wheels for safety. They wedge the tire bead to the rim, preventing potential bead
pops. If you're an aggressive driver bead locks are a must, and if you're
safety conscious they aren't an option, it's a must have.

| Front tires are an important selection because they steer the car, key to
good handling. Funco recommends a particular style of farm implement
tire, with a mild inline tread, incorporating smooth surfaces. This
helps steer the car with less sand thrown into the car. These implement tires
are very rugged and work great in both sand and dirt, alleviating the need to swap
out for an occasional desert run. |
